SERVICE

Service is one of my favorite aspects of higher education work because it contributes to the growth of those being served and those serving. Service opportunities highlight the passionate desire for learning and progress of those who work in higher education. Individuals, whether like-minded and similarly motivated, or seemingly incompatible, are able to work together in unique ways. Of course, there are endless meetings to attend, which can be taxing, but I believe the opportunities for learning and connecting with others are extremely valuable both professionally and personally. I find that service can enliven the passion for the work I do. For example, my service to the SHAPE Idaho organization has connected me to colleagues throughout Idaho and influenced my growth as a sport/physical activity professional.

My service to SHAPE Idaho began in 2011 when I was asked by the conference planning chair, Dr. Mike Lester, if I would help coordinate the annual conference which would be held at ISU. Although most of the tasks I was responsible for were related to organizing odds and ends and coordinating logistics, I was able to make important connections with other professionals throughout Idaho. Because of these connections, I was asked to serve as the district V representative for the SHAPE Idaho governing board.

SHAPE Idaho district representatives act as liaisons between the governing board and members/potential members who reside within their district. After fulfilling my two-year district representative term in 2013 I was asked by the board to serve as the journal editor. Within this role, I was responsible for soliciting, editing, and compiling the annual Idaho Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the organization’s newsletter.

Although I thought my time as a board member would end with my term as the journal editor in 2016, I was again asked to continue my service to the organization by becoming the president-elect. I was humbled by the request, and nervous for the responsibilities. Agreeing to this position would require three years of service where I would be asked to oversee operations, lead the organization, and organize the annual conference. Currently, I am serving as the past-president which will extend through October 2020.

I am truly grateful for the service opportunities I have had and look forward to many more in the future! Below, I outline my service engagements with (a) professional organizations, (b) the university, college, and department, (c) journal review, and (d) professionally related community service.
